Masters Golf Tournament: Mickelson Takes the Green Jacket

You could have been rooting for Phil Mickelson for any number of reasons. Maybe for sentimentality? His wife was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and winning the most prestigious event in golf is a great feel-good story. Or maybe even the mere face that Phil Mickelson is always within the top level of golfers, but rarely wins major tournaments. This time, however, was different. Despite trailing while entering each of the four rounds, Mickelson pulled ahead of leader Lee Westwood towards the end of the final round to secure a three-stroke lead after 72 holes and earn the famous Green Jacket awarded to the Masters champion. After winning, Mickelson avoided his well known jump following the 2004 Masters (the jury’s still out on whether he actually left the ground) and enjoyed the moment with his wife. It was truly a touching family moment to combat Tiger’s lively relationships.
The third, and probably the most prominent of reasons, involves Tiger woods. This year’s Masters wasn’t yet another victory for Tiger, it was all about Mickelson. Unless you have been living under a rock for the last five months, you certainly know something about Tiger Woods’ many marital transgressions. I personally wanted Tiger to win the Masters as a golfer, but even a comeback win would be tainted if a reporter asks him about his infidelity. Honestly, after hearing about Tiger Woods as much as I have, I am tired of his history and want to move past the marriage issues of the world’s most prominent golfer. At this point, I just want to move on and enjoy golf as a “sport”.
Surely, winning the Masters is a huge victory for Phil Mickelson, but it is an even greater victory for the golfing world to be able to take a big step forward towards forgetting about Tiger Woods’ history and into a new age of golf.
